PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

Position Title: Pharmacy Technician

Duty Station: Nestcare Clinic, Blantyre, Malawi

Reports To: Medical Director

Background: Nestcare is a private Maternal and Child Health (MCH) clinic located in Blantyre, Malawi. The clinic offers comprehensive MCH services including antenatal care, safe deliveries, postnatal care, child immunizations, family planning, and health education. As part of its commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care, the clinic seeks to employ a competent Pharmacy Technician. The Pharmacy Technician is a key member of the health team, supporting the provision of safe, effective, and efficient pharmaceutical services.

Purpose of the Position: To ensure the accurate dispensing, proper storage, inventory control, and rational use of medicines in accordance with Malawi’s pharmaceutical regulations and the clinic’s operational standards. The Pharmacy Technician supports clinicians and patients by providing timely access to prescribed medications and drug information.

Key Responsibilities

A.      Dispensing and Patient Care

  • Accurately dispense prescriptions in accordance with national guidelines and clinical prescriptions.

  • Educate patients on dosage, side effects, storage, and adherence.

  • Ensure patient counseling areas maintain privacy and confidentiality.

B.      Inventory and Stock Management

  • Receive, record, and manage stock of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.

  • Monitor stock levels and prepare timely orders to avoid shortages or expirations.

  • Conduct monthly stock takes and prepare inventory reports.

  • Ensure proper storage conditions (temperature, humidity, light exposure) for all medicines.

C.     Regulatory Compliance and Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate dispensing records and pharmacy registers.

  • Ensure all pharmaceutical practices comply with standards set by the Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority (PMRA).

  • Participate in internal audits and inspections.

D.     Quality and Safety

  • Monitor expiry dates and remove expired or damaged stock promptly.

  • Support adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting and pharmacovigilance.

  • Uphold infection prevention and control (IPC) practices within the pharmacy.

E.      Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with clinical staff to ensure the rational use of medicines.

  • Provide technical support during procurement planning and budgeting.

  • Participate in health education campaigns related to drug use or antimicrobial resistance.

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma in Pharmacy Technician Studies from a recognized institution.

  • Valid registration with the Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority (PMRA).

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working in a retail or clinical pharmacy setting.

  • Experience in a private healthcare facility is an added advantage.

  • Familiarity with Malawi’s Essential Medicines List (EML) and Standard Treatment Guidelines (STG).

Key Competencies and Skills

  • Excellent attention to detail and high level of accuracy.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team.

  • Fluent in English and Chichewa.

  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, stock management software, EMRs).

Working Conditions

  • The Clinic will offer 24-hour services, 7 days a week. The Pharmacy Technician will be expected to work 40 hours a week on a rotational basis (shift) to cover the operational hours.

Supervision and Performance Appraisal

  • Subject to Quarterly performance appraisals, based on accuracy, efficiency, compliance, and professionalism.
