GENERAL PRACTITIONER (GP)
Position Title: General Practitioner – Maternal and Child Health
Duty Station: Nestcare Clinic, Blantyre, Malawi

Background: The Nestcare Maternal and Child Health Clinic is a private healthcare facility based in Blantyre, Malawi, dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable, and patient-centred care to women, newborns, and children. The clinic plays a vital role in reducing maternal and child morbidity and mortality through accessible, evidence-based clinical services.
Role purpose: The General Practitioner will be responsible for delivering comprehensive outpatient and preventive healthcare services with a focus on maternal, neonatal, and child health. The GP will also provide general adult outpatient care, contribute to quality improvement efforts, and promote health education among clients and the community.
Key Responsibilities
A. Clinical Care
Provide antenatal and postnatal care in accordance with the WHO guidelines for a positive pregnancy outcome.
Conduct consultations for common childhood illnesses and support Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) practices.
Provide general outpatient care for both adult and paediatric clients, including diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
Refer high-risk pregnancies and complex cases to consultants.
Provide basic emergency care and minor procedures (e.g., wound care, IV therapy, etc.).
B. Health Promotion and Patient Education
Educate clients on safe motherhood, child nutrition, immunizations, family planning, and hygiene.
Support community outreach programs and maternal health awareness campaigns.
Encourage patient compliance with treatment plans and promote preventive healthcare practices to support overall well-being.
C. Documentation and Reporting
Maintain accurate and confidential patient records using the clinic EMR system.
Complete clinical documentation and prepare required reports (monthly clinical stats, referrals, adverse events).
Ensure proper recording of services in line with the Ministry of Health’s Health Management Information System (HMIS).
D. Team Collaboration and Supervision
Collaborate with specialists, nurses, midwives, and support staff to ensure integrated and holistic care.
Provide clinical mentorship and supervision to junior staff and interns.
Attend and contribute to clinic meetings, case reviews, and clinical audits.
E. Quality Improvement and Compliance
Follow national and facility clinical guidelines and protocols.
Participate in infection prevention and control (IPC) initiatives and quality assurance activities.
Uphold patient confidentiality and ethical medical practices at all times.
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
Fully registered and licensed with the Medical Council of Malawi.
At least 2 years of clinical experience, preferably in maternal and child health or outpatient settings.
Training in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required; Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EmONC) certification is an added advantage.
Key Competencies
Clinical competence in maternal, newborn, child, and general outpatient care.
Strong communication skills with the ability to engage sensitively with women and families.
Fluency in English and Chichewa (or other relevant local language).
Team player with good organizational and problem-solving skills.
Computer literacy and the ability to use electronic medical record systems.
Working Conditions
Clinic-based work in Blantyre, with potential for weekend or on-call rotations.
High patient volumes requiring efficient time management and multitasking.
Adherence to standard precautions for infection prevention and patient safety.
Performance Evaluation
The GP will undergo a performance review every 12 months, assessing:
Clinical effectiveness and diagnostic accuracy
Patient satisfaction and professionalism
Timely and accurate documentation
Adherence to protocols and quality of care delivery
Contribution to clinic goals and teamwork
