ACCOUNTANT

Position Title: Accountant

Background: Nestcare Clinic is a specialized Maternal and Child Health (MCH) facility located in Blantyre, Malawi. The clinic offers quality, patient-centred services including antenatal care, paediatric care, deliveries, family planning, and outpatient consultations. To ensure financial sustainability and operational efficiency, Nestcare seeks to recruit a competent Accountant to oversee the financial management of the clinic.

Purpose of the Position: To manage the clinic’s financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, reporting, payroll, and compliance with statutory obligations. The Accountant will ensure financial integrity, timely reporting, and support decision-making through accurate financial information.

Key Responsibilities

A.      Financial Management

●        Maintain and update financial records using accounting software.

●        Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow).

●        Reconcile bank statements and manage petty cash.

●        Track income from patient fees and other revenue streams.

B.      Budgeting and Planning

●        Assist in the development and monitoring of the clinic’s annual budget.

●        Prepare cash flow projections and variance analyses.

●        Advise management on cost-saving strategies and financial planning.

C.     Payroll and HR Support

●        Prepare and process monthly payroll, including statutory deductions (e.g., PAYE, pension).

●        Maintain up-to-date records of staff salaries, leave balances, and benefits.

●        Ensure compliance with the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and other relevant bodies.

D.     Procurement and Payments

●        Oversee accounts payable and receivable processes.

●        Review supplier invoices and ensure timely payment processing.

●        Ensure procurement documentation complies with internal control procedures.

E.      Compliance and Audit Support

●        Ensure compliance with local financial laws, tax regulations, and health sector financial standards.

●        Prepare documentation and support external/internal audits.

●        Maintain confidentiality and data protection protocols.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • Minimum of 3 years' accounting experience, preferably in a health facility, private clinic, or NGO setting.

  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar).

  • Knowledge of Malawi’s tax system, MRA procedures, and labor laws.

  • Membership with a recognized professional body (e.g., ICAM) is an added advantage.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and financial reporting tools.

Working Conditions

  • The Clinic will offer 24-hour services, 7 days a week. The Accountant will be expected to work from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and offer on-call services over the weekend if needed.

Supervision and Performance Appraisal

  • Subject to annual performance evaluations based on accuracy, timeliness, compliance, and support to clinic operations.
