SPECIALIST MIDWIFE / MATRON

Position Title: Specialist Midwife / Matron

Duty Station: Nestcare Clinic, Blantyre, Malawi

Reports To: Medical Director

Supervises: Midwives, Nurses

Background: Nestcare Clinic is a private maternal and child health facility based in Blantyre, Malawi. It provides comprehensive services including antenatal care, delivery, postnatal care, family planning, immunization, and child wellness. The Specialist Midwife / Matron is a key leadership figure responsible for overseeing nursing and midwifery services, ensuring clinical excellence, quality care, and effective team management.

Purpose of the Position: To provide advanced midwifery care, lead clinical service delivery, supervise nursing and support staff, and ensure compliance with health standards and protocols. The Specialist Midwife/Matron is expected to foster a culture of respectful, evidence-based, and patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities

A. Clinical Leadership

  • Deliver skilled midwifery services across antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care[1] [2] .

  • Supervise and support staff in managing obstetric emergencies and complications.

  • Lead daily ward rounds and clinical case reviews.

  • Ensure timely referrals of high-risk cases in collaboration with clinicians.

B. Staff Supervision and Mentorship

  • Supervise midwives, nurses, and support staff to ensure efficient operations.

  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and clinical guidance to junior staff and interns.

  • Schedule staff shifts, leaves, and rotations to ensure adequate coverage.

C. Quality Assurance and Clinical Governance

  • Monitor the implementation of clinical guidelines, infection prevention and control (IPC), and respectful maternity care (RMC).

  • Oversee documentation, including maternity registers, patient charts, and delivery records.

  • Participate in maternal and perinatal death audits and lead quality improvement initiatives.

D. Administration and Operations

  • Maintain inventory of clinical supplies and ensure availability of essential drugs and materials.

  • Ensure clean, safe, and functional clinical spaces in coordination with maintenance staff.

  • Contribute to budgeting, reporting, and planning activities in collaboration with management.

E. Patient and Community Engagement

  • Foster effective communication between patients and staff to ensure high patient satisfaction.

  • Provide patient education on safe motherhood, breastfeeding, and family planning.

  • Support community outreach and health promotion initiatives as needed.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Midwifery or Bachelor’s Degree in Midwifery (or equivalent), with post-basic training or specialization preferred.

  • Valid and active registration with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi (NMCM).

  • Minimum 5 years’ clinical experience in maternal health, including 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.

  • Training in Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) is essential.

  • Experience in a private or high-volume maternal health setting is a strong advantage.

Working Conditions

  • Based at Nestcare MCH Clinic, Blantyre.

  • Full-time position with flexibility for night/weekend shifts and emergencies.
